Benromach 10 Years Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

  • PRODUCER:

    The Benromach Distillery

  • REGION:

    Forres, Speyside, Scotland

  • AGING:

    10 Years

Benromach is part of the Gordon & MacPhail empire, a very small operation in the north of Speyside that is unique for using a small amount of peated malt in its mash. Otherwise, this 10-year-old is a traditional blend of 80% bourbon casks, 20% sherry casks. The final blend is finished for a year in first-fill oloroso sherry barrels.

The nose offers ample notes of roasted grains, sweet sugar cane, and wisps of smoke. Toffee and butterscotch with hints of liquorice and green apple. On the palate, the spirit is far more enveloping than this simple introduction might indicate, offering notes of fresh apple, banana, sugary cereal, honeycomb, and lavender.

Benromach 10 is a gentle dram, surprisingly balanced for a whisky just a decade in cask.

Tasting Notes:

The nose offers ample notes of roasted grains, sweet sugar cane, and wisps of smoke. Toffee and butterscotch with hints of liquorice and green apple.

On the palate, the spirit is far more enveloping than this simple introduction might indicate, offering notes of fresh apple, banana, sugary cereal, honeycomb, and lavender. The liquorice and green apple continue from the nose, joined by a maltiness, smoke and spicy cardamom and white pepper.

The smoke character is somewhat stronger here, leading the whisky to a powerful, almost pungent finish. A few petrol notes add a lightly industrial element to the mix — think the sweat and tears of industry, not bulk chemicals, that is. Warming, with the fruit and spice slowly dissipating to leave a delightful malty smokiness.

About the Producer

The Benromach story

A traditional Speyside distillery owned by a family of whisky-lovers intent on making single malt the right way with true character.

A handful of distillers relying entirely on our expertise and senses to make the finest handmade whisky; Speyside single malt matured exclusively in first-fill casks, with a subtly smoky character. It takes just four ingredients – barley, water, yeast, and a human touch.

All the casks are hand-filled, individually weighed, stenciled by hand, and stowed in our traditional dunnage warehouses. Why? Because at Benromach we believe making whisky by hand guarantees genuine character.

The history

The family, the Urquharts of Elgin, have always been passionate about whisky. Our ancestor John began laying down casks of single malt at different distilleries in 1915, when everyone else was blending their whiskies.

It was the realization of a long-held dream when we acquired Benromach Distillery in 1993. Five years of meticulous refitting of the distillery followed before HRH Prince Charles officially reopened our doors in 1998.

Time well spent creating a style of single malt reminiscent of the days before commercial maltings. A time when Speyside distilleries malted their own barley using peat to fuel the fires and impart a distinctive touch of smoke to their whiskies. The resurrection of Benromach Distillery signaled the rediscovery of a lost style of Speyside single malt.
