The Benromach Distillery has been producing exceptional Speyside whisky since 1898, famed for their devotion in using a personal touch, and aside from smell they use sight, sound and touch without a computer or pressure gauge in sight – the result; Benromach produces exceptionally smooth and lightly smoked whiskies.

Tasting Notes:

The nose opens with that lovely Benromach wood and smoke, coupled with some zesty citrus. This is all good. On the nose expect an immediate nod to this iconic Château with notes of red apples, dark berries, and sweet smokiness.

The palate is smooth with notes of creamy vanilla, smoke continues as do the rich berries. The background of pepper is noticeable, especially if you add a drop of water. The finish is a warming mix of orange peel, smoke, and spice. It feels suddenly worlds away from what you were just smelling. There’s almost a sour lime element with some general nuttiness, like hazelnuts or almonds, before transitioning into some damp smoke and mild white pepper, but not even enough to be really called a zing.

About the Producer

The Benromach story

A traditional Speyside distillery owned by a family of whisky-lovers intent on making single malt the right way with true character.

A handful of distillers relying entirely on our expertise and senses to make the finest handmade whisky; Speyside single malt matured exclusively in first-fill casks, with a subtly smoky character. It takes just four ingredients – barley, water, yeast, and a human touch.

All the casks are hand-filled, individually weighed, stenciled by hand, and stowed in our traditional dunnage warehouses. Why? Because at Benromach we believe making whisky by hand guarantees genuine character.

The history

The family, the Urquharts of Elgin, have always been passionate about whisky. Our ancestor John began laying down casks of single malt at different distilleries in 1915, when everyone else was blending their whiskies.

It was the realization of a long-held dream when we acquired Benromach Distillery in 1993. Five years of meticulous refitting of the distillery followed before HRH Prince Charles officially reopened our doors in 1998.
