Tasting Notes:

Nose: Funky, heavy caramel in the nose. Bright oak, paper and vanilla mingle gently on a deeper inhale. It noses light like the proof point might suggest. A deeper dive of the nose produces candied cherry, plum and creamy, viscous grape clafoutis.

Palate: Where the nose started light, this starts with a bang! Cherry hots sizzle on the top of the tongue as a soft, juicy pear and grapefruit co-mingle in the background. Another sip builds in a touch of lemon peel, tingling bright vanilla and sweet kiwi frozen yogurt.

One last sip of the glass produces a big wave of plum, raisin, blackberries, and caramel. The mouth feels thicker now more than ever as the sips build upon each other. The linger is medium with a soft draw down from a slightly earthy caramel bar.

About the Producer

In 1936 Thompson Willett founded Willett Distillery.

After years of purchasing whiskey from other producers and creating blends like Rowan’s Creek and Noah’s Mill, the Kulsveen family rebuilt the Willett Distillery in Bardstown, KY and began producing all of its labels in-house. Originally founded in 1936, Willett began distilling again in 2012, rejoining the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and establishing a cult following in its wake, and the company announced that it would return to using the Willett name as its primary business name.

For the Willett family, distilling craft whiskey is a family tradition. During Reconstruction, John David Willett began distilling whiskey at the Moore, Willett & Frenke Distillery, which was situated just outside of Louisville, Kentucky. While the Willett Distilling Company eventually changed its name to Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, the family tradition lives on — Even Kulsveen, the current owner of KBD, is Thompson Willett's son-in-law.
