We love all the hard toiled, passionate, craft distillers of the world. But the Garrison Brothers stand out in that crowd a bit taller than most. They do not farm out anything. Every step from cooking the mash to bottling happens right there on-site at their distillery in Hye, Texas. They make Bourbon in a range of ages and finishes, but it all started with the famous barrel #6 that yielded their signature Texas Bourbon Whiskey. 

Tasting Notes:

Fragrant fresh cut flowers and grass, rose petals & gardenias on the nose. Sweet rock candy taste: caramel apples, peanut butter & roasted pumpkin seeds. A lasting finish. Polished and refined. Roasted caramel, orange zest, cinnamon, sweet tea & tobacco. Our most mature bourbon.

So let's talk about that famous barrel. Back in 2007 and 2008, the Garrison brothers were experimenting to find the perfect recipe for their Bourbon. In 2008, they popped open barrel #6, took a sip, and instantly knew that they had found Texas Nirvana.

This magic combination is the platform they built their business on. These boys are proud of their accomplishments, and they should be. They recommend that you drink it neat a splash or a bit of soda water is fine too.

About the Producer

The scorching heat nuked the barrels. They leaked. Cracked. Broke altogether. Hundreds of gallons were lost.

But Dan’s spirit was stronger than his casks. It never bent, snapped, nor crumbled. He found a cooperage who was willing to form custom barrels with staves thick enough to stand up to the Texas heat. All 130 degrees of it.

There’s nothing quite like Texas Pride. And Dan and his team were hell-bent on doing whatever it took to make the very first, legal Texas bourbon.

About 40 miles south of Pecos, Texas, there’s a little swimming hole called Balmorhea where I took my kids when they were young. The park’s name comes from four men’s surnames: E.D. Balcom, H.R. Morrow, John, and Joe Rhea. These men formed an irrigation company in the area in the early 20th century.

It’s rumored that big game hunters may have gathered at the springs in the Balmorhea area 11,000 years ago. Native Americans also swam the springs before the sadistic Spanish explorers came to the area. In 1849, the springs were known as Mescalero Springs, after the Mescalero Apache who watered their horses here.

To see the water flowing up from the underground spring into the canals is mesmerizing, undeniable evidence that God exists. Today, many are concerned that fracking could hurt the water quality or otherwise damage this beautiful child of Mother Nature.
