An American Single Malt
After decades of experimentation by distillers across the country, in 2022 the TTB proposed the following definition for the American Single Malt: Bulleit American Single Malt is our unique take on this emerging category, crafted with a specially curated malt barley strain aged in charred American white oak barrels.
Tasting Notes:
While we’ve subbed our signature high rye grains for 100% malted barley, our American Single Malt still has that signature, subtle Bulleit spice with aromas of sweet vanilla and toasted oak. It’s light and fruity on the palate with hints of red fruit and pear, which follow into a smooth finish of oaky caramel and subtle cocoa notes.

An American Single Malt
After decades of experimentation by distillers across the country, in 2022 the TTB proposed the following definition for the American Single Malt:
An American Single Malt must be made from 100% malted barley, distilled entirely at one U.S. distillery, mashed, distilled, and aged in the United States, distilled to 160 proof (80% abv) or less, and matured in oak barrels that hold no more than 700 liters.
Bulleit American Single Malt is our unique take on this emerging category, crafted with a specially curated malt barley strain aged in charred American white oak barrels.
Tasting Notes:
While we’ve subbed our signature high rye grains for 100% malted barley, our American Single Malt still has that signature, subtle Bulleit spice with aromas of sweet vanilla and toasted oak.
It’s light and fruity on the palate with hints of red fruit and pear, which follow into a smooth finish of oaky caramel and subtle cocoa notes.
Distillation process:
We distill Bulleit American Single Malt the same way we craft our bourbon—on a copper column still with a secondary distillation in a copper doubler.
One key difference for the American Single Malt process is that we distill to a slightly higher proof than Bulleit Bourbon, delivering a lighter, brighter, and more delicate taste profile.
About the Producer
Bulleit, founded in 1987, is one of the fastest-growing whiskeys in America. The brand attributes that growth to bartenders and cultural partners who have adopted it as their own.
The Bulleit Frontier Whiskey portfolio is distilled and aged in the Bulleit family tradition, using a distinctive high rye recipe, which gives them a bold, spicy, yet distinctively smooth taste.
The award-winning Kentucky whiskey most recently won a Double Gold medal for Bulleit 10-Year-Old and Gold Medals for Bulleit Bourbon and Bulleit Rye at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
In 2017, Bulleit celebrated its 30th anniversary with the opening of a new, state-of-the-art distillery located in Shelbyville, KY.
Constructed with a focus on sustainable practices including natural habitat protection, water conservation and local ingredient sourcing, BDC received the Highly Commended award for Sustainable Distillery of the Year at the 2020 Icons of Whisky Awards from Whisky Magazine.
In 2019, a Visitor's Centre at the Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville opened to share our modern, technological, and sustainable approach to making great whiskey.
