  • REGION:

    Guatemala

  • AGING:

    18 Years

Born in 1893, Don Venancio was the first Botran Merino brother to be inspired by glorious Guatemala. Botran 18 is a blend for him. His passion, fire, and determination – in one bottle.

This expression from Guatemala might catch your eye. The blend of 5 to 18-year-old rums shares a similar profile to aged, grain-based distillates. Meanwhile, the complex, "dynamic" process used for maturation shares similarities with the Solera method of sherry. In this case, a combination of American whiskey, Port, and sherry casks are used, the latter adding a nutty character to the finish.

Sitting at the top of their range, the rums used for Solera 1893 are made with virgin sugar cane honey and are matured for between 5 and 18 years before going into the solera.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Deep mahogany with beams of reddish light.

Nose: Elegant and expressive. Notes of wood, cocoa, vanilla, and caramelized aromas followed by maple syrup, red berries, and spicy perfumes. A bit sweeter again, with a brown sugar note that pairs well with the coffee aromas underneath.

Palate: Robust, rich, succulent, coffee-infused, dry and elegant. Notes of caramelized fruit, maple syrup, spices, cocoa, and delicate red berries.

Finish Caramelized notes and red berries.

Not overwhelmingly complex, but the most balanced of the bunch and a solid cocktailing option.

Blend of 5-18-year-old rums.

About the Producer

Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala has a history dating back to 1939 and is located in the highlands of Guatemala.

Perfectly positioned between North and South America and flanked by the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, Guatemala is a land rich in biodiversity and varied ecosystems.

Situated over 1,000 feet above sea level in southwestern Guatemala, the Ron Botran Plantation enjoys generous amount of sunlight, mineral-rich volcanic soils and an ideal climate for growing fresh, raw sugar cane, the raw material of Botran Premium rums. Botran Rums are part of the 3% of the rums elaborated with the First Press from the sugar cane juice.

There, expert farmers — many of whom have been tending to the land for decades — carefully analyze the sugar cane as it matures on the estate, harvesting only the canes that contain high levels of sucrose and fiber and low levels of impurities.

The rums of Guatemala are also distinguished by their unique, high-altitude aging process in the highlands. The altitude and cooler temperature restrict evaporation so the rums may adopt their individual taste profiles. Making “high-rum” in this way is a unique art form that has been carefully conserved and enriched over the years.

For over six decades Botran has been crafting rums in this great Guatemalan tradition. The Botran family’s uncompromising dedication to quality and superior taste is present in every step of the process, from the sugar cane fields through distillation, aging and to the final blending.

They made one eye-opening journey, from sunny Spain to glorious Guatemala. And in 1940, they founded Botran. A rum with a distinctive attitude.

Distillers say they want to give the world a taste of the freedom, rhythm and vitality they feel in Guatemala. The cane is grown, fermented, and distilled in the rich green fields of Retalhuleu.

Then they age the rums in the mountains of Quetzaltenango, perfect conditions for letting the unique, Dynamic Ageing System shine. Finally, they bottle the rums in Mixco, near Guatemala City, creating a rum that’s the true product of Guatemala.
