If, when you think whiskey, you do not think Peru – then think again. This is a fascinating drop. A Peruvian whiskey distilled from Andean black corn in Lima. The dram is produced in traditional pot stills, and made with traceable ingredients, before being matured partly in “honeycomb” barrels from the Black Swan cooperage.
Don Michael is a family-owned Peruvian company that initially began making petrol. Thankfully, they’ve pivoted to a more palatable liquid – Andean whiskey. This dram takes its inspiration from the ancient Peruvian beverage “Chicha Jora” – a kind of corn beer.
To soften the edges of the powerful Andean black corn, they have added malted wheat and barley from the US and diluted it with pure Andean mountain spring water. The final product is a delectable, well balanced spirit with a distinctly Peruvian character.
Out of thousands of total entries, this singular standout was enshrined as ‘Best In Show’ across all categories of spirits. It also Best of Class and a Double Gold Medal.
This is a true limited edition of our world class Black Whiskey. Barrels are hand selected by our master sommelier Daiana Paola Milon Mayer.
Each barrel is special, and offers a unique expression of our Andean Black Corn Whiskey.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Waxy and leather notes, accompanied by tropical fruit on the nose.
Appearance: Spicy and sweet on the palate, with tropical fruit notes.Slightly herbal, with spicy cinnamon and a touch of clove on a long, smooth finish.
Palate: The palate leans into the earthiness with a hint of burnt cinnamon bark next to old vanilla pods, hard raisins, dried figs, and cornmeal mixed with sweet black potting soil and wrapped in a rum-raisin tobacco leaf.
