Made from 100% wild espadin agave, Oaxacan sun, water and time, this unaged expression is first about the agave, with smoke being a subtle accent. Unaged and clear, the spirit has deep agave aromas, along with hints of green apple, citrus, white pepper and a slight floral note. The finish shows lingering heat and sweet agave, which is ideal for cocktails or sipping on its own. It won a Bronze medal at the 2010 Tequila.net Awards.
About the Producer
Ilegal Mezcal was launched in 2004, when founder John Rexer began smuggling artisanal, unbranded Mezcal from Mexico to Guatemala to stock his bar Café No Se in Antigua. Word began to spread, and soon tourists, travelers, journalists and the like began smuggling the Mezcal from Guatemala back to the United States. Today, Ilegal Mezcal is made from agave harvested in the fields of Tlacolula, Mexico, and transported to master distiller Eric Hernandez’s facility for distillation and aging.
