Product Details

Since 1838, Carthusian monks have been making this herbal French liqueur, whose name hails from the Grande Chartreuse Monastery in the Chartreuse Mountains in the region of Grenoble. For it, distilled alcohol is macerated and steeped with 130 herbs, plants and flowers. (The monks claim that only two members of their order know all the ingredients.) The liqueur is aged five years in oak vats for added complexity. Milder and sweeter than the more legendary green version, it’s all natural, with no artificial colors or preservatives. Its hints of cardamom, anise, wildflower, coriander, honey and citrus work as an after dinner drink, served very chilled, as well as an intriguing cocktail ingredient.

About the Producer

Since 1737, Chartreuse has been produced by Carthusian monks in France, according to instructions described in a manuscript given to them by François Annibal d’Estrées in 1605. The name for the line of liqueurs hails from the Grande Chartreuse Monastery, located in the Chartreuse Mountains in the region of Grenoble. Since 1970, the company Chartreuse Diffusion has been in charge of bottling, packaging, advertising and selling the products, which are still prepared by two Carthusian Brothers entrusted with this mission by their Order. They work in the greatest secrecy and are the only ones who know the details of manufacturing.
