This is a single malt from the Yoichi distillery, Nikka's first distillery built in 1934. The founder Masataka Taketsuru chose Yoichi in Hokkaido because of the similar environmental conditions to Scotland, where he learned whisky making. Yoichi single malt has pleasant peaty notes and smokiness originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during the aging process. 45% ABV
Japanese Whisky of the Year - Whisky Advocate, 2016

"Heavily peated malt, with brininess from the ocean breeze. - Aged in New American Oak and Sherry Casks"

About the Producer

The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. Ltd. was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who traveled to Scotland in 1918 to learn the process of distilling Scotch whisky. He also studied organic chemistry at the University of Glasgow and malt whisky production at the Hazelburn Distillery in Campbeltown. After his death, the company was run by his son Takeshi Taketsuru, who expanded it substantially. Nikka is currently owned by Asahi Brewers, and produces a wide variety of Japanese whiskies.
